Commentaire: Edward II wanders on to the empty stage, bloodied and confused. He has no idea where he is, or how he got here, but he does have an ominous feeling that something is wrong. As that feeling grows, so too does the threat on the other side of the auditorium doors.

Edward finds himself locked inside the theatre with some rather anarchic fellow inmates: Gertrude Stein, Harvey Milk and Quentin Crisp. As they set about unravelling what has happened, only one thing is certain: everything is not as it seems…  (plus)

Commentaire: Adjoa Andoh and Lynette Linton co-direct the first ever company of women of colour in a Shakespeare play on a major UK stage, in a post-Empire reflection on what it means to be British in the light of the Windrush anniversary and as we leave the European Union.

As we play our part in defining a nation’s history and we become the shoulders on which future generations will stand, Shakespeare asks us to consider the destiny that we might be shaping for our ‘scepter’d isle’.

Richard II marks the beginning of a cycle of history plays that will provide a unique opportunity to rediscover how Shakespeare perceived ‘this blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England’. Our year-long exploration of ‘our scepter’d isle’ will take us on a journey through history via Henry IV, Henry V, Henry VI, and Richard III.  (plus)

Commentaire: Edward II is a play about homosexuality, the abuse of power and a quarrelling court. Filled with song and poetry and heart and guts, it is a violent, sumptuous and altogether thrilling ride of a Renaissance piece set in the period it was written (1593 or thereabouts). Ten actors and three musicians will take on this incredibly visceral story in the candlelit beauty of the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse.  (plus)

Commentaire: Macbeth and Doctor Faustus are Shakespeare’s and Marlowe’s responses to the Faustian bargain, so whilst they are performed throughout the winter, a new series of responses will play in tandem, all written for the unique architectural playing conditions of the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse.

An ensemble of women writers that includes Lily Bevan, Athena Stevens, Lisa Hammond and Rachael Spence, Katie Hims and Amanda Wilkin, will respond to the provocation, with the ultimate aim of creating a chorus of female voices at the crossroads, asking the question: What would you sell your soul for?  (plus)

Commentaire: Self-denial is in fashion at the court of Navarre where the young king and three of his courtiers solemnly forswear all pleasures in favour of serious study. But when the Princess of France and her entourage arrive, it isn’t long before the all-male ‘academe’ have broken every one of their self-imposed rules. Shakespeare’s boisterous send-up of all those who try to turn their back on life is a dazzling parade of every weapon in the youthful playwright’s arsenal, from excruciating cross-purposes and impersonations to drunkenness and bust-ups. It’s a banquet of language, groaning with puns, rhymes and grotesque coinages.  (plus)

Commentaire: The republic of Venice employs General Othello, a self-made man and a Moor, to defend its overseas territories against the Turks. As the Turkish threat gathers and Venetian forces are despatched to Cyprus, the love Othello holds for his new wife becomes a raging, uncontrollable torrent. Iago, a junior officer secretly enraged by Othello, exploits his General’s ambiguous position and ingenuous nature, driving him into a passionate and overpowering jealousy.

Othello is an all too human story; marked by the domestic intimacy of a chamber piece, it has the feel of a relentless Greek tragedy.

The wasteland of death may be both Iago’s goal and his harvest, but the stage belongs to Othello, a man who loved perhaps unwisely and too well.  (plus)

Commentaire: In a fit of groundless jealousy, Leontes wrecks his marriage, defies the gods, destroys his family and ruins himself. As the years roll around, a new generation flee their own country and take refuge in Sicilia. Unknowingly they bring with them the key to the past, present and future…

A ‘winter’s tale’ is a fantasy, and The Winter’s Tale is Shakespeare’s great play of the irrational and inexplicable. The play’s uncontrollable emotions – rage, love, grief and forgiveness – range across gender, country, class and age. Its universe is full of monsters, gods and natural disasters, and its colossal sweep takes us from stifling courts to unbuttoned festivals.  (plus)

Commentaire: ‘A famous pacifist once said: ‘We must teach ourselves to make the same sacrifices for the business of peace that we make unquestioningly for the business of war. There is nothing which is more important to me, and which lies closer to my heart.
I was born in Coventry, with two parents and two brothers. And one set of grandparents living on an island called Penang, on the west coast of Malaysia, and one set of grandparents living on an island called Man, on the west coast of England. I was raised to believe that you should love your neighbour more than yourself, and that it’s better to be killed than to kill. I used to think I knew where I stood.
This is a story about discovering and excavating and questioning and mourning, and learning and learning and learning. About the events and places which have become significant to me because of the blood in the ground, and about tracing the links between them. It’s a theatre essay on mixed-race families, militant pacifism, and the Rape of Nanking.’

Commentaire: We will be taking Twelfth Night, The Taming of the Shrew and The Merchant of Venice on tour to various venues across the world. On the night of the performance, audiences will vote on which play they want to see performed. The tour will start and end on the Globe stage.

How did a company tour in Shakespeare’s day? We know that when the theatres closed, a small group of actors, juggling a variety of roles in three or four plays from their extensive repertoire, would leave London and head off on tour. We also know that the choice of play or entertainment was left to the most powerful person of the household.

So, following in the tradition of our resident playwright, and in a first for Shakespeare’s Globe, between May and September 2018 a company of eight actors will offer audiences a choice of three plays: The Merchant of Venice, The Taming of the Shrew and Twelfth Night. They will perform all three at the Globe before setting out on a national and international tour. And also in keeping with tradition – and with thrilling unpredictability – the choice of play will be put back into the hands of the most powerful members of the house: the audience.

Brendan O’Hea, director, actor, and passionate education practitioner, has previously performed in a number of productions at Shakespeare’s Globe including Cymbeline (2015), Measure for Measure (2015), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2014), and Henry V (2012).
‘The combination of Shakespeare, the Globe and touring ticks every box for me. The chance to share those glorious words and my experience of playing that beautiful theatre with audiences throughout the world excites me beyond measure. And I’m relishing the opportunity to direct three of Shakespeare’s most popular plays in a unique and unpredictable presentation.’

Commentaire: ‘As Shakespeare’s Globe comes of age and reaches its twenty-first year, it seemed appropriate to start the 2018 summer season with the question ‘Who’s there?’ The opening words of Hamlet will be the first of many questions asked to our audiences and ourselves as we look to the future and the next twenty years of Globe seasons.
Playing alongside Hamlet will be As You Like It. Both written around 1599, the year the original Globe was built, these plays speak to each other in surprising and exciting ways. An ensemble of artists will explore these well-thumbed and popular plays in parallel, as if for the first time, and will put the story and the storyteller at the heart of this exploration.’  (plus)

Commentaire: Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons comes to thrilling, theatrical life in an exhilarating show combining Gyre & Gimble’s master puppeteers with a quintet of London’s finest musicians. The performance will conjure a poetic and emotional narrative in response to Max Richter’s acclaimed recomposition of Vivaldi’s masterpiece, which has been newly arranged for the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse. This unprecedented collaboration will explore the crystalline acoustic and candlelit ambience of the space in an enchanting new way.
As well as being a composer, Max Richter is an accomplished pianist, producer and collaborator, and indisputably one of the most prolific of contemporary musical artists.
Gyre & Gimble place puppetry at the heart of storytelling. The company, founded by former associate puppetry directors of War Horse, use puppetry to create compelling characters and tell fantastical, improbable – even impossible – stories.  (plus)

Commentaire: This timely story of passion, politics and patriarchy is a reimagining of John Dryden’s Restoration drama, Aureng-zebe (1675). The Captive Queen is set in the late 20th century during the last days of the great woollen mills of the north of England, but retains a flavour of Dryden’s original Mughal Indian setting. The original score by Niraj Chag re-creates the rhythms of war, of workmanship, and of India, providing the backdrop for the regular beat of Dryden’s rhyming couplets, which echo the relentless whirring of the machines.
Barrie Rutter, Artistic Director of Northern Broadsides, assembles a cast of actors in this wry exploration of the folly of old age, the allure of power, and the bewildering effects of lust and desire.  (plus)

Commentaire: Based on the true story of her great uncle and freedom fighter Dinesh Gupta, Lions and Tigers is the world premiere of a new play by leading playwright Tanika Gupta. This dramatically relevant and authentic story is set against the backdrop of negotiations between the leaders of the Indian National Congress; the future Prime Minister Nehru wavers between his respect for Gandhi’s non-violence and his admiration for the youthful fervour of the militant Bengali nationalist, Subhas Chandra Bose.

Tanika Gupta has written over 20 stage plays for major British theatres but this is her most personal play yet. Based on family stories that Tanika heard from early childhood, the play teems with details drawn from her grandfather’s 500 page handwritten journal about his younger brother – and from the 92 letters written by her great uncle from his prison cell.  (plus)

Commentaire: About The Globe Young Players

In January 2014, Shakespeare’s Globe will be opening the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse – a 17th century reconstruction of an indoor Jacobean theatre that will be lit entirely by candlelight. As part of the first season in the new, indoor space, we will be performing The Malcontent with a new company of young players. This new company will be specially selected 12 to 16 year olds who will be given the once in a lifetime opportunity to train under the Globe’s own expert practitioners, on site, culminating in performing on stage.

Open to a range of acting abilities and experience, the Globe Young Players is a free scheme designed to select the best talent from around the UK by holding open auditions for 12 – 16 year olds from any background, anywhere in the UK. Successful applicants will work once a week for six months followed by an intensive rehearsal period, culminating in professionally staged performances of John Marston’s finest play, The Malcontent. For the first time in 400 years, The Malcontent will be performed and recreated by a company of young actors for whom this play was originally written, in the tradition of the child actor companies of Shakespeare’s time.

The Malcontent will play for 12 performances in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse from 3 to 19 April 2014, and will mark the finale of the Globe’s first ever winter season in the new indoor space.

The Young Players will be schooled in the craft and performance of Early Modern drama, and work with professionals in text, voice, movement, dance and fights.  (plus)

Commentaire:

Presse: "The big problem with the show is that even in this intimate space the former Bond girl Gemma Arterton makes so little impression as the Duchess." Charles Spencer for The Telegraph

"The luminous Gemma Arterton beautifully captures the multi-faceted quality of the Duchess ..." Paul Taylor for The Independent

"... the success of the evening lies in the fact that Webster's play and this exciting new space [the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse] make a perfect fit." Michael Billington for The Guardian

"The tone is intimate and chatty rather than declamatory, which seems to be a deliberate antidote to the melodramatic excesses of the original." Simon Edge for The Daily Express

"The atmosphere is highly charged, with the elegant, rustling costumes adding to the sense of shadowy gorgeousness." Henry Hitchings for The Evening Standard

Commentaire: In Doctor Faustus, the greatest tragedy in English before Shakespeare, Marlowe puts some of the greatest poetry ever written for the stage and a good deal of anarchic comedy at the service of a mythic tale illustrating mankind’s insatiable desire for knowledge and power.

This was the first production of Doctor Faustus at the Globe.  (plus)

Presse: "Dr Faustus isn't a great play...there is never quite enough frisson between the leads. This is a confident and lucid account of Marlowe's most famous work, but it's not electrifying." Henry Hitchings for The Evening Standard

"Rude, robust, bawdy, magical and violent, it is a provocatively entertaining production." Neil Norman for The Daily Express

"This is a Faustus that often looks impressive, with its sinister choreography and grotesque designs, but when it comes to genuine chills and thrills, the audience is left seriously short-changed." Charles Spencer for The Daily Telegraph

Commentaire:

Presse: "Lucy Bailey’s production of Macbeth is startlingly gory. Blood and violence are everywhere..This is a production full of nice touches. It’s at times disturbing, and a couple of scenes are very funny...We’re entertained, but not mesmerised."
Henry Hitchings for The Evening Standard

"As a vision, it works rather well...But at times, Bailey's interpretation tips over into surreal bad taste, evoking laughter at pivotal moments which mars the tension..."
Julie Carpenter for The Express

"It is playful, original and powerful."
Sarah Hemming for The Financial Times

"A mish-mash: a production full of ideas but so focused on spectacle, much of it resulting from Javier de Frutos's orchestrated movement, that Shakespeare's most compact tragedy is stretched to more than three hours."
Michael Billington for The Guardian

"This Macbeth will be remembered as an enjoyably gory curiosity rather than a deeply felt human tragedy."
Charles Spencer for The Daily Telegraph

Chorégraphe:
Avec: Adetomiwa Edun (Romeo), Jack Farthing (Benvolio), Ellie Kendrick (Juliet), Rawiri Paratene (Friar Laurence), Ukweli Roach (Tybalt), Tom Stuart (Paris)

Commentaire: Dominic Dromgoole’s production brings refreshing clarity to one of Shakespeare’s most famous and best-loved tragedies, drawing out the contemporary relevance of this passionate teenage love story. Ellie Kendrick, a truly youthful Juliet, and Adetomiwa Edun, a boyish Romeo, head an excellent cast whose period costumes point to the timelessness of parental disapproval, adolescent temperament, rivalry and violence. - See more at: http://www.shakespearesglobe.com/shop/product/2009-season-shakespeares-globe-romeo-and-juliet-dvd/86#sthash.3vYgG9UG.dpuf  (plus)

Presse: NICK CURTIS for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "What’s missing, finally, is the passion. The lovers are believable and authentic: their love, sadly, isn’t quite." CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "Dominic Dromgoole's brisk, unfussy production...kept me hooked almost throughout...But it is for the beautiful sincerity of the young lovers – mischievous, tender and grieving – that this production will be best remembered." MICHAEL COVENEY for THE INDEPENDENT says, "There's a pleasing athleticism to Adetomiwa Edun's Romeo, but he's fuzzy-voiced and emotionally monotonous...His Juliet is equally inexperienced, a prim little speedy lapwing in Ellie Kendrick's performance who's neither girlish nor sexually adolescent...they're miscast here." LYN GARDNER for THE GUARDIAN says, "But for all its initial urgency, and a beautifully staged ball scene where the young lovers first catch each other's eye, this evening, like a great many love affairs, simply peters out." DOMINIC MAXWELL for THE TIMES says, "Adetomiwa Edun, as Romeo, is 25 but doesn’t look it. Ellie Kendrick, as Juliet...looks as close to Juliet’s real age of 13...The contrast between their callow idealism and the adult mores that crush them makes Dromgoole’s production a refreshing reading of the text. All it needs, to seal the deal, is the passion between the leads that would make their love look like more than infatuation." SARAH HEMMMING for THE FINANCIAL TIMES says, "While both [Adetomiwa Edun & Ellie Kendrick] deliver the verse well, neither can quite reach the lyrical heights they need. More importantly, they can’t convey the tragic weight of their fate. Their reactions to terrible news are underwhelming. They don’t make you weep for them. And this is the main weakness in a production that is otherwise lively, clear and peppered with witty touches." LISA CHILDS for THE STAGE says, "Gripping and fresh."
